Expressive Therapies
Marillac uses several expressive therapeutic interventions in its treatment, including art, music and recreation therapy. Many children are not able to verbally express trauma they have endured. Art, music and recreation therapy allow children to express their feelings and thoughts in creative ways. Moreover, they provide opportunities for the children to form trusting relationships with adults.
Art Therapy is a visual, verbal and expressive form of therapy that uses various art materials and the art-making process in a supportive relationship to explore personal problems, identify each child’s potential and communicate emotions.
Music Therapy is a verbal, non-verbal, tactile, auditory and expressive form of therapy. It involves song writing, lyric discussion, drum circle (and other rhythm-based activities), singing, movement, drawing to music and more.
Recreation Therapy provides children with therapeutic physical, social, emotional, cognitive and leisure experiences to improve motor skills and teach cognitive and social skills.
